about

In Episode 31 Downbeat bravely states that (even though they don’t want to indulge in sensationalism!) they think it’s their duty to the community to name names of musicians who are arrested for drug use and to demand that bandleaders refuse to hire musicians who use “the stuff” and fire any such vermin they currently employ. Ralph J. Gleason, who later grew his hair and worked for Rolling Stone, vituperates (occasionally inarticulately, he’s so exercised), calling on the music business to expel weakling (addicted) musicians from the world of decent people, sounding just like Joe McCarthy snarling about Commies. "Sammy Curtis" embraces religion and Shelly Manne compassionates addicts and Art accepts his father’s offer to send him to a sanitarium to kick. The music at the end is the first recording of Art's Patricia. With Shorty Rogers's band.
