From the Liner Note: "Donna Lee is one of my favorite bebop tunes in the world. It's got this oddly oblique melody that enchants me-and it's my favorite track on this album. And because we're at a jam session, we excuse occasional confusions and mistakes. Donna Lee is supposed to stop on a dime.John Heard forgets and plays another note, then cleans that up, and everybody laughs.
A number of people remark on Warne's "cerebral" approach, but what I hear from Warne on this track is rock-solid: it's swinging, and exceptionally cheery. And then, along comes Art. Bringing excitement. This is what jazz can be, ought to always be: Exhilaration rules! Underneath the audience applause, you hear Art's satisfaction; "Yeah," he tells the band."
