about

This is the band from Art's legendary Vanguard session in 1977.
Art, George Cables, George Mraz, Elvin Jones.

In 1977 , at 52, Art made his East Coast debut as a leader. The gig that terrified him the most was this one at the Vanguard. Especially after it was decided that Contemporary Records would record him, live, there. George Cables and Art had already recorded together (The Trip and No Limit), but they hadn't gigged together. Art had recorded once with Elvin, too (The Trip). For the Vanguard, we'd planned to bring in a very young bass player Art had liked a few weeks earlier in Chicago. But on the first night, during their only rehearsal, Elvin said the bass player was too green. So at 3 AM we needed a bass player who could read the charts from the minute—to start recording at the Vanguard that night. The bartender suggested George Mraz and handed us the telephone. We called him right then and asked if he could come to a rehearsal later that day and start recording that night. He said yes. George M read some pretty complicated charts at sight and played like an angel. Art's hastily written under-the-influence blues chart, "Vanguard Max" was as complicated as this error ridden performance indicates and Art never played it again after that weekend. I'm CRAZY about it. I can hear what it could have been. Yeah, kind of West Coast-y, right? (He rewrote & simplified two of the other hard charts he wrote for that date. George Cables liked, "My Friend John" and "For Freddie," and after George came on the road with us, Art played them a lot.)
