Some serious Americana! Straight Life is mostly narrated by Art Pepper, but there are also contributions by Art's family and friends. In his review of the book in the Village Voice, Gary Giddins refers to these as "a brutal montage of voices—relatives, acquaintances, and friends, as well as disingenuous magazine interviews—that amplify and contradict Pepper's steely narrative."In this episode I read Sarah—the woman who partly raised Art's mother, "She was a little liar", AND I read the story of Art's family and childhood as told by Thelma, Art's stepmother, a born storyteller. Can you imagine my delight when I interviewed HER? Continually glancing at the cheap little tape deck to make sure it was still running? Oh! PS, there's a complete track of music at the end!
